A comparison of two things.
Suppose there are 5 pets, 3 dogs and 2 cats
The ratio of dogs to cats is 3 to 2.
It has 3 forms: 3 to 2 3/2 3:2
All three ratios mean that there are 3 dogs and 2 cats.
This order is important, and must be respected
A ratio of 3:2 is not the same as a ratio of 2:3

Ratios can be expressed in several ways:
fraction, decimal, percent

When expressing a ratio, we can use a colon ":" in place of the word "to"
There are 5 pets (3 dogs and 2 cats)
What is the ratio of dogs to the total number of pets?
3/5 are dogs (2/5 are cats)
0.60 are dogs (divide 3 by 5)
60% are dogs (change 0.60 to a percent)

The ratio of dogs to cats in one small neighborhood is 3 to 2.
If there are 8 cats, how many dogs are there?
There are three dogs to every two cats. This is expressed as a ratio 3:2. If there are 8 cats, then the number of dogs is 3/2 = X/8.
X=8*3/2
= 12
