Commutative property of addition
Show/Hide
The commutative property of addition says that we can add numbers in any order.
4 + 5
= 5 + 4
= 9
Commutative property of multiplication
Show/Hide
The commutative property of multiplication says that we can multiply numbers in any order we want without changing the result
4 x 5
= 5 x 4
= 20
Associative property of addition
Show/Hide
The associative property of addition tells us that we can group numbers in a sum in any way we want and still get the same answer.
3 + 4 + 5
= (3 + 4) + 5
= 3 + (4 + 5)
= 12
Associative property of multiplication
Show/Hide
The associative property of multiplication tells us that we can group numbers in a product in any way we want and still get the same answer.
3 x 4 x 5
= (3 x 4)x5
= 3 x (4 x 5)
= 60
Distributive Property
Show/Hide
The Distributive Property lets you multiply a sum by multiplying each addend separately and then add the products.
3 x (4+5) = 3x4 + 3x5
3 x 9 = 12 + 15 = 27
Density property
Show/Hide
The density property tells us that we can always find another real number that lies between any two real numbers.
between 4.1 and 4.2, there is 4.11, 4.12, ...and so forth.
Identity property for addition
Show/Hide
The identity property for addition tells us that zero added to any number is the number itself.
5 + 0 = 5
Identity property of multiplication
Show/Hide
The identity property of multiplication, says that a number does not change when that number is multiplied by 1.
5 x 1 = 5
Multiplicative inverse property
Show/Hide
The multiplicative inverse property states that if you multiply a number by it's reciprocal, the total will equal one.
5 x (1/5) = 1
